BlackBerry Messenger 6.0 screenshots leak

bbm 6
A leaked early version of RIM’s upcoming BlackBerry Messenger 6 has been making the rounds since late February, but images of the new app are just now beginning to appear. Over at CrackBerry, the crew has shared a handful of images of BBM 6 in action. Unfortunately, you won’t get a glimpse at a chat or file transfer — only the profile screens (after the break) and what you see above. All that’s really revealed so far is the option to set custom contact and chat colors and BlackBerry OS 6.1-style icons.

CrackBerry also warns against installing the leaked BBM 6 app. There’s no guarantee this app hasn’t been tampered with, and BlackBerry devices are becoming a more common target for cybercriminals.

Windows Defender beta gains ‘offline’ functionality, can run sans-OS

  • Posted on December 11, 2011 at 11:00 pm

PC users have been using Windows Defender to free themselves from the bane of viruses, malware and spyware for quite a while, but until now, you’ve needed Microsoft’s OS running for it to do its work. That changes with a new beta, which creates bootable CDs or USB sticks that can run the utility. Those interested can begin by downloading the Windows Defender Offline Tool, which’ll prompt you for either of those mediums and then install around 300MB of virus hating bits. And remember, because you’re statically downloading an almanac of today’s viruses, doesn’t mean you’ll be ready for those tomorrow, so those taking the plunge better remember to stay up to date.

VMware adds Mozy to its cloud and virtualization empire

  • Posted on December 11, 2011 at 5:00 pm
mozy vmware

Mozy is one of the most popular cloud backup services around, with more than one million users storing around 70 petabytes of data. Its popularity apparently put it on the acquisition radar of VMware — which has now made Mozy part of its virtualization empire.

VMware’s official blog post makes it clear that the company wasn’t so much interested in Mozy as a consumer offering. Rather, it’s the inner workings of Mozy which piqued VMware’s curiosity. CTO Steve Herrod says, “Over the past 5 years, Mozy has built one of the best examples of a globally distributed, large-scale cloud offering.” He adds that the move will allow VMware to “further ramp our own cloud-related learning and accelerate new IP, scale, and capabilities” of its existing offerings.

Existing Mozy customers don’t need to worry, of course. VMware has pledged to continue running Mozy’s service without interruption.

Federal domain seizure raises new concerns over online censorship

  • Posted on December 10, 2011 at 6:00 pm
It’s been a little more than a year since the US government began seizing domains of music blogs, torrent meta-trackers and sports streaming sites. The copyright infringement investigation, led by US Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE) authorities, quickly raised eyebrows among many free speech and civil rights advocates, fueling a handful of legal challenges. Few are more compelling, or frightening than a case involving Dajaz1.com. As TechDirt reports, the popular hip-hop blog has been at the epicenter of a sinuous and seemingly dystopian dispute with the feds — one that underscores the heightening controversy surrounding federal web regulation, and blurs the constitutional divide between free speech and intellectual property protection.

Dajaz1 was initially seized under the 2008 Pro IP Act, on the strength of an affidavit that cited several published songs as evidence of copyright infringement. As it turns out, ,any of these songs were actually provided by their copyright holders themselves, but that didn’t stop the government from seizing the URL anyway, and plastering a warning all over its homepage. Typically, this kind of action would be the first phase of a two-step process. Once a property is seized, US law dictates that the government has 60 days to notify its owner, who can then choose to file a request for its return. If the suspect chooses to file this request within a 35-day window, the feds must then undertake a so-called forfeiture process within 90 days. Failure to do so would require the government to return the property to its rightful owner. But that’s not exactly how things played out in the case of Dajaz1. For more details on the saga, head past the break.

Firefox 4 Mobile officially released for Android and Maemo devices

  • Posted on December 9, 2011 at 6:00 am

Firefox 4 MobileMoments ago, Mozilla stripped the release candidate moniker from Firefox 4 Mobile and pronounced it fit for public release. If you have a Nokia N900 phone, or a fairly-modern Android 2.0-or-later device, go ahead and install it from the Market, by using scanning the QR code after the break, or by visiting Firefox.com/m.

Accompanying the release is the launch of Spark, a cute social game that’s designed to fuel the adoption of Firefox 4 Mobile, much like last week’s use of Glow and Twitter Party during Firefox 4 PC’s release.

While the browser still feels a little rough around the edges, it’s definitely worth trying out if you’re still using Android’s stock browser. Its JavaScript performance is significantly better than any other Android browser, and if you use Firefox on your PC, its built-in Sync functionality is awesome.

Over the next few days we’ll have plenty of tips and tricks for Firefox 4 Mobile, and a list of the best add-ons available for the new browser.

Exploring Some Implications Of Driverless Cars

  • Posted on December 9, 2011 at 1:00 am

google-car-1-460Driverless cars have been a popular and fertile topic for research and discussion for years. From the first high-profile Grand Challenge to the more recent work by Google, there has always been activity, though it’s rarely applicable to everyday life. But a few years from now we’ll really need to start pondering the potential effects of these robocars on cities, infrastructure, and markets. Koushik Dutta has written an interesting little post on Google+ about one potential major change that could come with the automation of vehicles. If a car can drive itself, that drastically increases its potential efficiency, and decreases the number of cars necessary per capita, especially in a city. You better believe the car companies don’t like the sound of that.

Corel releases VideoStudio Pro X4, we go hands on (video)

  • Posted on December 8, 2011 at 2:00 pm
videostudioprox4

Corel seems to be on a roll lately; after releasing WinZip System Utilities just last week, this morning the company announced VideoStudio Pro X4.

VideoStudio Pro is aimed at home users and small business professionals who want to create professional-looking videos, but without the hassle, steep learning curve and price of Adobe Premiere Pro and the likes.

This new version introduces several features:

  • Stop motion animation: You can now capture still frames using a webcam, camcorder or DSLR and use them to produce an animation. Tools such as “onion skin view” let you compare the previous image in the sequence with the current one and make the animation as smooth as possible.
  • Processor optimization: Corel says the app is optimized for Intel’s new Sandy Bridge systems, and have shown us some graphs with very impressive numbers. We’ve been unable to test this particular point, but if you have a recent-generation Intel or AMD Fusion system, VideoStudio performance should be blazing. Even on our older test system performance was quite impressive.
  • Customizable workspace: You can drag the video preview window to your secondary monitor (if you have one) and tweak just about any other element in the window layout. Once done, you can save your ideal workspace in one of three slots.
  • Share-to-Web: VideoStudio Pro X4 hooks directly into YouTube, Vimeo, Facebook and Flickr, so you don’t even have to launch a browser to upload your final product. Edit, produce and share from within the app itself.
  • Smart Package: Video projects typically consist of many files; Smart Package lets you bundle all video assets for a given project into one ZIP file which you can password-protect and keep in a safe place once you’re done editing.

I’ve had a chance to play around with a pre-release version for a few days, and have put it through its paces editing a short video for my day job. Overall, I’ve been impressed with how easy it was to create pro-looking results. If you do any sort of video editing but are leery of the investment other apps require (both in dollars and effort), VideoStudio Pro is well worth checking out. To see a bit of the interface itself and what the app can do, watch the video after the jump.

Note: We’ll be running a give-away of ten VideoStudio Pro X4 licenses later today, each worth $100 USD. Keep your eyes peeled for the giveaway post!

AVG launches LiveKive cloud sync and backup tool

  • Posted on December 8, 2011 at 9:01 am
avg livekive dropbox

A while back, we told you about AVG’s new LiveKive service, a new cloud synchronization and backup tool which appears to have been named after a vat in which mash is made during the brewing process. But enough about AVG’s odd choice of monikers — LiveKive has launched and is now ready to accept your files into the AVG cloud.

LiveKive takes aim at services like Dropbox and SugarSync, though at the moment it’s lagging behind in terms of features. As it stands, LiveKive is only compatible with Windows and OS X. There are no mobile clients yet, though with AVG’s strong presence on Android we wouldn’t be surprised to see an app arrive in the near future.

The company is offering a heck of a deal right now, however. If you sign up for a paid account during the launch phase, you can score unlimited storage for $80 for a whole year. You can’t even score 50GB per year at that price from Dropbox, so if cost and space are more important to you than cross-platform availability, LiveKive might be worth checking out.

If you’re not interested in ponying up any cash at the moment, you can still get a 5GB account free of charge. Just head on over, and create a LiveKive account.

Farragomate is a social fridge magnet game where you make up sentences

  • Posted on December 8, 2011 at 6:01 am
farragomate

You know those fridge magnet kits composed of a whole bunch of words? The ones you put all over your fridge door and then try to arrange into all sorts of juvenile and/or amusing sentences. Well, Farragomate is the social, webby version of that very same pastime.

You get to play with a bunch of random strangers in real-time, and make up sentences out of a pre-set collection of words, including some fairly naughty ones, and all players’ nicknames. As you can imagine, some of the results are not child-friendly.

There are ten rounds to a game. Once a round is done, players get to vote for their favorite sentence from that round. You can’t vote for your own creation, of course. There’s in-game chat, too.

I think the vocabulary could be made a bit more eclectic, but even as it is, it’s a nice way to spend a few minutes and meet random strangers on the Internet (always a thrilling experience).

Android Market Reviews

Let's face it, while app reviews in the Android Market might be helpful to developers and potential customers for finding out some of the best and worst features of the current release of an app, they haven't been altogether too informative, and could be skewed to show the app as being worst/better than it really is. Old reviews can still weigh heavily on the user's choice, especially if those reviews mention glaring bugs that had been fixed in recent updates or that were only present on older Android phones. Also frustrating is when developers see a review with good feedback that they would like to save/share later, only for it to get lost in the thousands of other reviews for that same app – going back in to find it later is like trying to find a specific needle in a pile of other similarly formatted needles.

The web version (not on your devices yet) of Android Market has solved those two concerns with a simple and effective update. Users can now see the type of device that the reviewer was using the app on (such as the LG Optimus 2X in Juan's review above) and the version number of the app that they were reviewing (version 2.9, again, in the screenshot above).

On top of that, developers (and anyone for that matter) can now grab the permalink to individual reviews for sharing or reading later. To the right of every reviewer's nametag and device info you will see the universal symbol for "link". Click that icon and the page will reload with that review on top and a fresh URL that you can send anywhere.

In the future it would be nice to sort reviews by specific devices or app versions being used, rather than asking us to browse through or link them all individually (it would also be great if they reproduced this in the mobile app soon), but for now this update is a welcome change.

Thanks for the Tip, Stephen!

ZTE V881 is Blade’s successor, adds modest bumps in specs

  • Posted on December 6, 2011 at 11:00 pm

We saw the ZTE Blade V880 make its official outing at MWC in February, and given how quickly sequels to other phones have been coming out this year we’d say it’s ripe for a successor. Enter the ZTE V881, a device that essentially adds a +1 to a few of its parent’s specs: a 3.8-inch touchscreen at WVGA (800 x 480) resolution, a Qualcomm MSM8255 CPU clocked at 1GHz, 512MB of RAM and a 5MP rear camera. There’s no availability date as of yet, but it appears poised and ready to cost around 1000 yuan (around $160) when that time comes. Head over to our friends at Engadget Chinese for a couple more pics.

All Eyes on Carrier IQ Following Spyware Allegations

  • Posted on December 5, 2011 at 11:00 pm

Software from the company Carrier IQ that’s preinstalled on many mobile devices sold in the United States is capable of recording many of the activities performed on those phones and potentially relaying the data back to carriers, according to security researcher Trevor Eckhart. Eckhart refers to the software as a “rootkit.”

Add playback hotkeys to Amazon Cloud Player with a Chrome extension

  • Posted on December 5, 2011 at 8:00 pm
Sure, Amazon’s Cloud Player works — as long as you’re in the U.S. or willing to do some tinkering — but it’s fairly simplistic at the moment. There are plenty of features missing which we’d like to see added — but since Cloud Player is a Web app we don’t have to wait for Amazon!

Google Chrome users, for example, can add playback hotkeys with an extension called keyMazony. Once installed, you’ll have keyboard control of your Amazon Cloud Player queue. keyMazony commands will work as long as you’re in the same Chrome window as Cloud Player, even if its tab doesn’t have focus. The key combinations are customizable as well — just make sure you don’t set up a combo that conflicts with another extension or Chrome’s built-in keyboard shortcuts.

LG Nitro HD Review: You Win Some, You Lose Some

  • Posted on December 5, 2011 at 10:00 am

LG Nitro HD I find myself looking at the Nitro HD with mixed feelings. In some ways, it’s exactly what I’ve been asking for from LG, and in others it simply brings about disappointment. The software, in particular, failed to impress me. Hopefully a much more clogged 4G LTE network from AT&T (compared to the like, seven people that are using it now) will still find a way to outweigh the lag on what should be a high-end Android handset.

You can now rent Adobe Photoshop for $35 per month, CS 5.5 available soon

  • Posted on December 5, 2011 at 6:00 am

Rejoice! No longer will you have to fork over $700 for a Photoshop CS5 license! Adobe has unveiled a new subscription scheme where you can rent the entire Creative Suite, or individual packages, by the month, or for an entire year.

Adobe Photoshop can be yours for $35 per month if you agree to rent it for 12 months, or $49 per month if you require its services for a shorter period. Dreamweaver can be had for even cheaper, at just $19 per month. The entire Master Collection is still rather expensive, though, at $125 per month.

Today, Adobe also ushered in the release of Creative Suite 5.5, and simultaneously upped its release cycle from 18 months to 24 months. This means, if you rent Photoshop for two years, it’s actually the same cost as buying it outright. There’s no rent-to-own option, though — so you wouldn’t have access to the cheaper upgrade price once Creative Suite 6 rolls around next year. Still, if you need access to Photoshop, After Effects or Premiere for a one-time project, the new rental scheme could be exactly what you’re looking for.

In other news, Adobe has announced that it will be launching three rather exciting iPad apps that work in conjunction with Photoshop: Eazel, Nav, and Color Lava. Eazel lets you five-finger paint on your iPad, and export the result into Photoshop; Nav acts as some kind of workspace, brush and menu extension, and the hopefully named Color Lava is a paint mixing palette. The apps are expected to appear in the App Store in the next 30 days.

Let it Slide is an engaging, difficult puzzle game

  • Posted on December 1, 2011 at 9:00 pm
letitslide

I have a thing for physics games, and I’ve been known to post the occasional platformer or action game here and there. But Let it Slide is one of the brainiest games I’ve posted to date.

The idea is very simple, and far from original: You get a board with pieces arranged in a particular pattern; you have to slide those around until you get the special piece into its target location.

It’s not even about finding out where the target location is – you can just hover over “dim tiles” and instantly see where you’re supposed to bring the special piece. But getting it there is a whole different story.

There are five tutorial levels, which I strongly recommend you do. Then there are twenty “beginner” levels, but that’s really a misnomer. If those are the beginner levels, I don’t want to know what the intermediate and advanced levels look like!

Every time you finish a level you get a score based on how many clicks it took you – each level has a “par” (the minimum number of clicks it could be completed in), and your performance is compared to that gold standard. Because it’s such a brainy game, getting it right is quite satisfying. I was downright proud of myself when I managed to finish a few levels. All in all, quite recommended, especially if you’ve got a few minutes of quiet. It might actually help you focus better later on.

Sonos adds Android tablet support, Slacker Radio, new beta service

  • Posted on December 1, 2011 at 4:00 pm

Sonos for Android

Sonos, the maker of the high-end wireless stereo system, today announced that it's updated its Android application (check out our previous review) to include support for Android tablets. And, yes, that includes the Amazon Kindle Fire, which you see here. Also, Slacker Radio is now on board for yet another streaming music solution. In addition, Spotify's gotten an update, there's now support for AAC+ codecs, and Sonos has added a beta path if you like living on the bleeding edge and want to test features before anyone else.

Full presser's after the break.

Keyless Ride’s K2 poses as an OEM-compatible car remote, saves you time and money

  • Posted on December 1, 2011 at 1:00 am
If your keyless entry fob stops working, finding a replacement can be harrowing, which is why automotive locksmith Keyless Ride developed the K2 universal remote. Rather than stocking hundreds of individual OEM units, dealerships just have to dock a K2, tell it what make, model and year your car is (it’s compatible with 70 percent of the North American market) and it’ll pair up with your ride’s on-board wireless hardware within five minutes. Better still, you can lighten the load in your pocket by adding a second car to the same remote (if you have a weekend whip, that is). The company will be demonstrating at next year’s CES, throwing James Bond-style gun poses as they open two cars at once — we hope.

Adobe Flash Player 11.1 coming to the Galaxy Nexus by end of year

  • Posted on November 30, 2011 at 1:00 pm

Adobe Flash

Adobe's been saying this for a week or so now, and today it made it officially official in an official blog post: Flash Player 11.1 will come to the Samsung Galaxy Nexus. Huzzah. Look for the update in December (makes since, because November's 24 hours from being in our rear-view mirrors).

Glad to see another one last update for Flash Player (and AIR as well, which we're already seeing in the Android Market) for the Galaxy Nexus. Now if only we could get the phone in North America.

Apple puts Galaxy Tab 10.1N on the chopping block, asks German court for preliminary injunction

  • Posted on November 30, 2011 at 9:00 am

It wasn’t long ago that Samsung modified its Galaxy Tab 10.1 to get it back on the German market, and it didn’t take long for Apple to respond. Apparently, Cupertino didn’t take kindly to Sammy’s sneaky workaround, and has filed for an injunction to stop the 10.1N from showing up on store shelves in Germany. The slate’s fate will be determined on December 22nd, so we’ll have to wait and see whether it joins its siblings on the sidelines, or is around to deliver some Honeycomb delights to those in Deutschland come Christmas morn.

hyper-vbackupbeta

This one’s for the sysadmins in the audience: Altaro, makers of our favorite “time machine for Windows” back solution, OopsBackup, have just announced a new product entering beta called Hyper-V Backup.

It’s a backup solution for virtual machines running on Microsoft’s Hyper-V virtualization solution. If that sentence just seemed like a bunch of buzzwords crammed together, Hyper-V backup is not for you. But, if you actually use Hyper-V and are hankering for a good backup solution, Altaro might be worth checking out.

The beta run is limited – Altaro are looking for just 250 testers. All participants will get a free license key to the final, production version. So if you’re interested in helping test Hyper-V Backup, get yourself over to Altaro now and join the beta.

Elephant Quest is an addictive, deep platformer

  • Posted on November 29, 2011 at 10:00 pm
elephantquest

When someone tells me about a “platformer”, my first thought is that it’s probably a simple game that mainly revolves around running and jumping around, with a minimal plot. [Play a Zelda game! -Ed]

Elephant Quest is one platformer that managed to prove me completely wrong. Yes, you do run and jump around, and you also shoot at stuff. But the game has much, much more going for it.

Basically, as you run, jump and shoot, you gain experience points and level up. Hitting Space brings you into an interface where you can convert your experience points into Charisma, Intelligence, Agility and Dexterity points. Once you’ve “specialized” your points, you then get to pick what exact skills you’d like to enhance in each field. For example, you could use your dexterity to enhance your weapons or increase your swiftness.

The game is played in a huge maze; you go through rooms using doors, and there’s a large map. As the name implies, there are quests you can take, too. For example, one quest had me searching all over the place for ten balloons.

The bottom line is that this is a surprisingly deep game that just might ensnare you for a good bit longer than you intended to play. Beware!
